finished it at 12:18 am on the 1st goddamn it. first book of the year and wow what a way to end 2023 and start 2024.

some of the most beautiful drawings I have ever seen in my life. the intricacies of each panel, each page, and each chapter is something that should definitely be studied. the interview afterward too where she gives us a crumb of her, and the artist's, meaningful selections in the drawings is so magical because you sit there in awe at their genius. I learned so much from this and cannot wait to learn more about American history! (this is a joke, I'm not excited at all).

all in all, a lot of what she said resonated with me a lot. the fact that her ancestors lived within her. the fact that the history and lives of her ancestors haunt her every day is so raw and real. and also the fact that she discussed revolts. she talked about violent revolts and ones led by women at that. she talked about how these revolts were documented but then removed from history. She discussed how history is written by the oppressors, and how regardless of the truth, a narrative can be spun in any which way they please. lastly, she talked about joy and the expression of black joy and how she is all for it, however, history needs to be taught accurately first. people should be taught. everyone should know about the atrocities. that precedes joy. it always has and it always should. otherwise, we are all complicit. this is all for the future generations. the revolts were, the erasure of history was, and now the remembering and the honoring of ancestors is for the future. for a better world.

welcome to 2024.

Super thought provoking, and incredibly interesting. My only thing is that I felt that the art style was a bit too busy which sometimes distracted me from the conversations that were happening.
