adventurous challenging emotional informative inspiring tense fast-paced

I went to one of those classes organizations put out over zoom meetings, and Dr Rebecca Hall was the guest instructor one day. I like her especially since I'm an autistic person and her discussion of having to navigate getting fired resonated. I heard about this book from that class, and i looked it up via my library card and the audiobook version was available. I appreciate the author's note at the end explaining how the non-fiction was adapted into fiction.

The information is great, I'm looking forward to reading her thesis, and i learned about the books "maroon societies" & "American negro slave revolts" from her class.

I wish I liked this book more. I found the illustrations hard to see - as in, I often couldn't tell what the drawings were or how they related to the narrative. I was frustrated by this because I think the ideas and research in the book are important. I think it just didn't translate well into a graphic novel.

incredibly informative and powerful. a must read for anyone looking to learn more about slavery and how a lot of its history has not only gone undocumented, but has often been erased and barred from public access. as a librarian, it was difficult to read how many times the author was denied or turned away from archives and other information institutions when compiling research on women-led slave revolts. however, I also know that the information profession is not exempt from a history of racism nor from rewriting or suppressing history, and this book was a very important reminder.
