“Our memories must be longer than our lifetimes.” Gorgeous and powerful graphic novel/memoir/historiography.

This was a bit of a disappointing read as I was expecting to learn about women led slave revolts (as the title suggests) but received little to no tangible evidence to support Hall’s claims. This graphic memoir instead, focuses primarily on Hall’s own expedition to unearth archives alongside her frustrations and distress from the obstacles she encounters to access historical information. As a result, readers simply get tiny morsels of data that Hall utilizes to develop her own speculative revolt stories. While some ship logs reveal that women slaves were left unchained on quarter decks, it is not wholly clear whether those women truly led or partook in the insurrections. Therefore, this book left me feeling unsatisfied and wanting to know even more than what was shared.

I read this as I was preparing a presentation whose first part touched on enslaved people. The amount of new knowledge I learned from that research alone showed me parts of history I never knew before.
This novel was the same! I really liked the illustrative style for this novel and I learned so much history that I didn’t know before and some that I did. I really appreciated how the author focused her attention on the women, especially those who led the revolts, especially those on ships and how powerful and authoritative they were.

Powerful. Brilliant. Eye-opening. A must-read.
"I dove straight into the erased, the unspoken, the blank spaces in the documents. I felt compelled to uncover the stories of other Black women who fought for justice. Those women warriors who fought their enslavement."
"It is in the legacy of the slave patrol, where not just police but white people in general see themselves as responsible for monitoring everything we do "while black.'"
