“they say that the trauma of our ancestors are stored inside us; in our bodies, our minds, or spirits. so goo is our resilience.” part history, part memoir, all in a graphic novel. very happy i picked this up at the library, lots of history i simply was never taught about!

I enjoyed the information in the book. It is an unknown part of my history. There were times when it was hard to follow the narrative though.

Covers a side of history that has been wrongly buried - like most Black people’s stories. The research and attention to detail shine through in this graphic novel/memoir, and the art is just as visually arresting as the art is literarily arresting. A fine read, and a necessary one as American and British society continues to learn of its past crimes during the slave trade.

Thank you to NetGalley & Simon for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review!

I feel like I need to explain why this was only two stars for me.

Yes, the content is heart wrenching, horrific, sad. But I don’t think it set out what it wanted to do - for me at least - in that it quite simply didn’t live up to its title. There was very little of “hidden history of women lead slave revolts” and more of a idea of how women maybe participated.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe for a second that women were not involved in any slave revolts. I don’t doubt that women were involved, were ring leaders, and made their own heart wrenching decisions on rebellion - you just need to dive into history to truly see this, and take one read of Beloved.

I also just think graphic novels aren’t my thing, so this novel unfortunately just didn’t speak to me.

Just not my cup of tea, and I don’t think the title delivered in its content.

A very personal exploration of a facet of history that still has so many unheard stories. The portion set in England pulls no punches, in a way that makes me want to force all my friends there to read this. I learned so much, and felt so much: it does its job and more.
