 required reading.

incredible  illustrations that provided even more depth of the “hauntings”- historical trauma witnesses into the present.

Hall’s personal quest in attempting to uncover the history was beautifully woven in -and effectively highlights the  current state of (racist/imperial) affairs.

Fine. Not as much a story of women led space revolts beyond that they existed. It was more a story about her research process to attempt to uncover info

“As Audre Lorde said, ‘We were never meant to survive’ “

“You think you are reading an accurate chronicle written at the time, but if who we are and what we care about are deemed irrelevant, it won’t be in there.”

This was one of the most unique pieces I think I’ve ever read. Although it ended up being much different than I anticipated, it was still an enjoyable, heartbreaking, thought-provoking read.

I’ll be honest, I anticipated more emphasis being on the historical pieces - the untold stories of the women lead slave revolts. In the end, this was much more about the author’s actual challenging journey to uncover these stories. It’s about how the history we learn to this day is not all encompassing. It’s about how there are people who have higher influence in the way stories and information are passed down over the course of time. (This doesn’t make it better or worse - just different than I expected so I want my audience here to have that knowledge in advance if they choose to read it).

The graphic novel aspect added so much visual impact; I am not well versed in graphic novels by any means, so for me it was easily the most detailed visuals I’ve ever seen in a book. The imagery between past and present was stunning, and the aid it provided to the storytelling was crucial. I can’t imagine this story being told in any other way!

Overall, I would recommend. A very quick read that still packs an emotional punch, and includes some stunning black-and-white detailed graphics.
