Before reading this comic book, I wish I had known it was more of an autobiography—focused on the author’s personal journey into her research, rather than a deep dive into the actual “hidden history of women-led slave revolts,” as the title states.
While it was an informative read, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed. I went in expecting to learn about the women mentioned in the title, but instead got a narrative that centers more on the author herself: her research process, the challenges she faced, and her emotional investment in uncovering this history.
The book does uncover something important, that many of these women’s voices were never recorded in the historical record. That absence makes it difficult to tell their stories with any detail or authenticity. As a result, the author uses “historical imagination” to construct scenarios based on historical context. It wasn’t what I was expecting, and it left me wanting more concrete stories of these women’s lives and acts of resistance.
The author is probably as frustrated as I am about the gap in the archive. I hope that in her continued research, she’s able to uncover more stories as these are definitely stories worthy of being told.
5 stars = enjoyed, would look for other books by author, would recommend, will continue the series

I did not exactly read this book. I listened to an audiobook of the author’s battles to teach and the discrimination she faced. This version seemed more like an introduction to the making of the graphic novel. I now will need to seek out the actual graphic novel as this audio made it seem fascinating.
