3.5 stars. A YA book that was on my 50 Book Challenge list.
I LOVE Sarah Dessen and I LOVED this book. It has a romance story that I could only dream of and it really highlighted the power of family, as many of her books do. I could not recommend this more. I read it in one sitting.
I used to love Dessen's books growing up, but ten years later her stories haven't really grown. They tend to feel rather formulaic YA to me. Her characters and their struggles tend to mirror each other from book to book, so this wasn't cutting it for me; I feel like I've read this story a million other times. The writing is still enjoyable to read, but the pace is agonizingly slow, and the plot is kind of boring.
If you're a fan of coming-of-age stories, I'm sure you'll enjoy this, which is why I'm giving this 3 out of 5. It's not the worst book I've read, and it certainly doesn't warrant anything lower than an "OK" rating.

It was drawn out and slow. I usually love her books. This one wasn't the same caliber as Dessen's other books. Not putting it in my library.

Sarah Dessen does one thing and she does it well. It's always comforting to dive into one of her books!
One of my favorite YA romances! The whole book is just so atmospheric and immersion. And the characters are so loveable and well written
5/5 stars. Again, Sarah Dessen never fails to put heart into her characters. She shows how important connections are and the memories we make from them. This novel discusses family in all it has to offer: the good, the bad, the bittersweet. Emma Saylor admits her mother's wrongdoing but still loves her for who she was. She accepts that her mother doesn't represent her side of the family. We love people and we love all the parts of them, even the parts that are hard to see.
Classic summer Sarah Dessen story, and she's always dependable for a lovely YA read. I don't know if this is my favorite she's ever done but I really enjoyed reading it! I always crave these types of books in the summer.
