An absolutely beautiful masterpiece of a book. Every sentence is gorgeous; not a word is wasted. There are honestly no words I could use to do it justice.

Incredibly poetic and metaphor heavy reflection on basketball, community, success, Black neighborhoods, and life generally, both at large but primarily at the very local level. There were a few points I was lost because I don’t know about basketball or some of its stars, but it was worth it for the soaring heights of Hanif’s language.

I listened to the audio which really highlighted the rhythms of his writing.

“One might grow up loving Michael Jordan or Allen Iverson or whoever else would come along. But none of us could ever touch those players. We could fantasize ourselves into their worlds, into their league. But they weren’t one of us. There isn’t a Michael Jordan in every neighborhood, but I had the Michael Jordan of East Columbus just four doors down from my house, sometimes with his car pulled up on the grass of his front yard, shining up the fading beige exterior, drowning the block in warbled bass.”
