I’m not sure I can adequately explain the profound experience ear reading this book was. There were moments I teared up not because of the content of what was being said, but by how beautifully it was said. Hearing the author read his own words made it all the more impactful. So many layers and poetic reflections on life and sport and home and just wow. Impeccable, damn near close to perfection.

this book was so beautiful. i don't remember —or even know— if i had ever read such a beautiful book. i give it a 4.75 with an asterisk, because this could totally be a 5, but I just need to digest the last "quarter" better.

krod97's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 38%

This was not what I was expecting at all. I thought this would be about basketball, but it felt like there wasn’t hardly any basketball in the entire book. Sure, he mentions it occasionally, but I thought it would mostly have basketball with parts of his backstory of course.

I finally recognize the game!! Jk jk. Seriously, it was a solid listen. I have always appreciated listening to others that have grown up around poverty but I also have an even greater appreciation for basketball and what it can mean to the players themselves or the community. It was beautifully written, raw, and insightful. I will think of our champions forever when watching any team really.
