Imagine if Dolly was black, American and wrote in a slightly more poetic way about basketball. A bit like how everything I know about love is actually about friendship here the basketball is actually about the city and community and what it is to be a black man in America. I don't know much about basketball but you don't need to, it's a bit like how you don't really need to know about football to understand fever pitch (Nick Hornby). There's something lovely when someone talks to you about a thing that interests them wholeheartedly. And you don't need to share that affection to be immediately enthralled. I like when people are a bit obsessive about the things they enjoy. Hanif is very in that camp. It's an excellent book. 5/5.
