Ah I enjoyed the first half of this a lot. But then it veered off into heavier sports talk, religion and politics and it lost my interest. The politics felt shallow for me, and I truly do not care about sports so while I appreciated the basketballisms in the beginning, by the second half it felt heavier, almost like I was being forced to sit next to a hardcore basketball fan and listen to them talk watching a live match 😂
I really did love the depth of the first half, especially with the focus on the beauty of baldness, family haircuts, his dad eating and gesticulating etc.
Those things were well built and I felt connected to those moments.

Remarkable. I want all writing about sports to be in this register. I feel I could return to this book again and again and always find new depths.

Best book I’ve read in awhile. Poetic love story to his city and his people.

absolutely nobody is doing it like hanif. the worst part of reading his work is the fact that i am completely discouraged from ever trying to write about how it makes me feel. but yeah finishing this on the same day as game 4 of the nba finals seems thematically appropriate lol
