Habit Abdurraqib never misses. One of our most thoughtful writers of the era, Abdurraqib has an ability to intertwine subjects and themes so seamlessly, that even when the surface level topic of discussion isn’t something of interest, the writing remains utterly compelling.

Basketball is low on my personal list of favorite sports, but in the hands of Abdurraqib, I hung on every word and moment of the sport. It’s in no small part due to the way he connects the game and the moments to larger concepts and feelings, but I still frequently found myself wanting to go look up an image or a moment from a sport I have never once gone out of my way to watch in the past.

Abdurraqib’s love of the game is infectious above all else.

Outside of the basketball, Abdurraqib also opens up about his personal life that really drives home some of his larger points. His love of community and the wholesome nature of the bonds he forms and sees in his world is something I think we should all aspire to. The ways in which he illuminated the oppressive nature of our American society is also as powerful as ever in his writing here. Solidarity is tantamount to forming the community required to break the constricting bonds of white supremacy. Basketball certainly isn’t a solution for the larger issues. But basketball does present some applications of the tools in our toolbox, and it often provides joy while it’s at it.

I would certainly recommend this book to others, particularly lovers of basketball, but even those who are not. I look forward to continuing my way back through Abdurraqib’s works.

I’m not entirely sure what I read to be honest, but it felt honest and held my attention. Maybe I’m not the intended audience despite also at heart being an Ohioan, but sports was just conversation I had to endure or avoid. He worships it.
He almost convinced me that sports matter but they’ll always mean nothing to me.
If you love Ohio give it a read.
