This started off as a strong contender for the worst book I’ve ever read, and somehow just kept getting worse. I swear Colleen Hoover puts zero research behind the topics she includes in her books (abuse, mental health, schizophrenia) and just writes based off of stereotypes. I am sure she was trying to be extra edgy with this content, but that wasn’t nearly as offensive to me as the constant repetition and over explaining, as if the reader wasn’t capable of figuring out context clues or remembering the “safety signal” they were told about exactly one chapter ago. It’s also weird that the epilogue started at 65%.. don’t say “the end” if the book isn’t over yet. Then comes the prologue.. but wait we’ve already heard this exact story from Asa’s point of view. Then another epilogue. It’s like the never ending story except with drugs, murder, rape, and way too many mentions of coconut cake.

I really enjoyed the fast-pacers story line of this book. I finished it in a little under a day.

Colleen Hoover has exceeded my expectations with this one! Multiple twists that I wasn’t anticipating. A diabolical and mentally unstable villain. A damsel in distress that needs saving. An undercover cop wrestling between his investigation and his unexpected emotional connection. This is good stuff!!
The only thing that really frustrated me in this book was Sloan’s inability to fight back, and her naive nature in this most toxic relationship.
Ultimately, the ending was satisfying and I thought the audio narration was really good!

Trigger warning: rape and abuse
The few Colleen Hoover books I've read, I've adored. Something was missing with this book and I have a hard time believing that the same author who wrote [b:Ugly Love|17788401|Ugly Love|Colleen Hoover|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1399179135s/17788401.jpg|24878172] also wrote this book.

Not one of my favorite Colleen Hoover books. The story line was fine, if a bit predictable.
