This book was wonderful. There was never a lull in excitement. It shares an important message that becomes more important as the days go on in real life.
We follow the main character as she begins to realize she is a he (I will use he from here on). He gets bullied for who he is before he even realizes who he is. This books covers homophobia, transphobia, and the representation of invisible illnesses. These topics need to known as our world changes. I enjoy how this book brings these issues up in a way older kids and young teens can enjoy without feeling forced.
I enjoy how the main character did not go back to his former best friend after the popular girls kicked her out. My favorite personality trait of Liv (the main character) was his ability to never backdown and fight for what he believes in no matter the costs.
This book is most likely what a young teen dealing with similar issues could need to take a stand. Even if that teen isn’t ready to take a stand or to come out they could still feel empowered and comforted by the representation featured in this book. Even if that teen is not Transgender the book still has many lessons to teach them.

Personally, I loved it. Nice story, loveable characters, easy to read. However as a cis woman reading a book by a cis woman about a trans coming out experience, no way am I giving a higher rating without seeing positive reviews from trans folk and I’ve not managed to find any so maybe that’s rather telling.

3.5/5

I have read this book twice now, and both times I have been emotionally invested in this wonderful story. I love the representation, the themes on friendship and communication, and the way that there are very real insights into how tough middle school can be. This book makes for great discussions with kids and all of my students who have read it have loved it.
