I'm never sure how to rate short story collections. anyway, as far as this one goes, its okay. not great. it's a broad overview of stories from different settings. I just couldn't get into the characters. They seemed to be earlier works of his, because the writing style is okay, but it has become much better. Go with "Dreams Underfoot" for a good de Lint collection.

Some of the stories in this collection were breath-taking and lovely. Others were just OK, thus the 3 star rating. This is my first time delving into the writings of de Lint and I feel that this was a good introduction as many of the characters/locations are used in his other works.

Great book - deserves a 3.75, I think. De Lint makes you know his characters and want to know more. There are a few preachy bits of quaintness that are almost necessary in his version of the short story genre, but I enjoyed them. Blue Girl is up next! :-)

Beautifully written and a nice change from the typical fantasy.

My first journey into the magical worlds of de Lint's urban fantasy. This masterful collection is divided into sections depending on location, but it crosses all boundries of fantasy and fiction to become something extraordinary.

A very charming collection of short stories. De Lint really knows how to write a captivating tale, and he does it over and over again in this book.

Maybe it was because of all the praise on the book calling Charles de Lint the best modern fantasy writer, but I was kind of severely disappointed. Which is not to say that I didn't enjoy the stories. There were some great parts, and even though I occasionally felt like the stories were dragging on (probably a side effect of reading [b:The Bus Driver Who Wanted To Be God|836957|The Bus Driver Who Wanted To Be God & Other Stories|Etgar Keret|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1178781107s/836957.jpg|191662] right before this...I got used to reading two-page short stories) they were for the most part memorable and engaging. Sometimes the writing annoyed me by being overly simplistic and repetitive, and fantasy stories that rely too heavily on contemporary settings are not my cup of tea to begin with, so I can't say that I loved these stories. But I appreciate all the research and effort that he put into them, and the fact that he is so thorough in creating his worlds.

This was my first time reading any of de Lint's work, and while I enjoyed it, I felt that the difference in writing style varied a bit too much for me. The stories came from all points in the author's timeline, and that messed with the flow a little. Still, the stories were entertaining, and a few of them really hit home with the characters. What I loved most about the writing was de Lint's beautiful way with imagery.
