This book is fast-paced, action-paced, no nonsense thriller, with a solid plot based on sound logical reasoning. Perhaps this excellent aspect of the book is why it gets raving reviews and a high rating on Goodreads. After reading a bunch of books with plot holes, this book is refreshing. Unfortunately, nothing is perfect and the cast in this book is not quite my liking.

Zoe Bentley is a logical, high focused forensic psychologist who
Spoilerhas accurately deduced the real identity of a serial killer when she was just 14 and then
became a forensic psychologist
Spoilerbecause the police didn't believe her and tried to pin the murders on an innocent kid. As a result, the serial killer got away with the murders and continuously taunted Zoe with reminders of her past
. While Zoe is professional and does not wander to talk about clothes, jewelry or other elements that distract from the plot, she is also direct and cold, to the point it makes people feel like she's an a$$hole. However, this is not the main reason why I dislike Zoe, it's her carelessness with handling the case files. I'm also in the law enforcement business and there are strict guidelines as to how you can handle any information related to crimes. Therefore, it's extremely unacceptable
Spoilerfor Zoe to spread all the crime scene photos on the surface of a bar in full public view
. As a profiler, she should also be aware of the fact that serial killers might stick around and around investigating officers just to keep track of the investigation. Her action could have serious consequences and might even tip off the culprit. Other than that, she's a character that the readers can relate with (in a certain way) and the last part
Spoilerhow she handled the rescue of the family
was well done.

I'm also a bit put off by Tatum (is it just me or do images of Channing Tatum pop into people's mind when you try to imagine what Tatum's like? I know the description doesn't fit but somehow that name sticks so much I just can't shake the image off). He's not a bad character but the first time when he met Martinez, I thought he's an a$$hole. This probably is why I think Zoe and Tatum would make a wonderful couple and partners in crime detection (they're BOTH A$$HOLES) wwww.

The rest of the cast is fine, particularly Andrea (who doesn't like a cute little sister who can COOK wonderful meals and stick by you at all times?)

This book ends at a point where it makes me dying for the next book and though Zoe and Tatum started out as a$$holes, I think as the story progresses, they'll make a great team.

I thought that A Killer's Mind was an interesting and quick thriller read. I liked how the book bounced between Zoe's past, her current investigation, and the killer's perspective. It made the story feel more like it showed you how she profiled and whether it was accurate versus telling the reader. Zoe initially felt a little one-dimmensional, but she grew on me a bit. I'm curious to see where the series goes.

I've gone back and forth on whether to go two or three stars. I settled on three because the first half or so of the book had me trying to talk other people into reading it with me. It was interesting and fun and felt fairly plausible. The author's style felt very similar to [a:Robert Dugoni|63650|Robert Dugoni|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1405264763p2/63650.jpg]'s Tracy Crosswhite series. But as the book progressed, I became much less enthused.

There were a few things that bothered me about the writing, including the female character not feeling particularly genuine, but the biggest was the overused plot device of not communicating. Whether it was Zoe not communicating with Tatum or Zoe and Tatum not communicating with the appropriate law enforcement folks. It feels like the author is taking the easiest option to get to the conclusion they want. And it was used more than once in this book which compounds the frustration I felt.

I will say that the very last page left us with what could be a great sequel but I don't know that I like Zoe or Tatum enough to bother with it.

A friend recommended this series to be because I told her about the Unsub series by Meg Gardiner. While I still like Unsub a little better for it’s action scenes and plots loosely based on actual serial killers, this was very entertaining. Less action and more about the psychology of the serial killer which was very interesting. I will definitely be reading the other two.

I loved Zoe and Tatum as a team. They couldn’t be more different, yet they complimented each other very well.

Great cliff hanger at the end to get me fully invested.
