Loved this collection. It felt surprisingly modern and I loved the characters. Favorite stories beyond the Lottery: The Renegade, Of Course, Got a Letter from Jimmy.

I really felt like up to a key point in the scene setting, Mrs. Walpole and I have very similar mornings:

“I am not going to let this bother me until after I have had my coffee, Mrs. Walpole told herself firmly. She put extra butter on her toast and tried to relax..”

Like most books of short stories there were a few standouts: The Lottery, The Renegade, The Tooth, The Daemon Lover, Flower Garden. A lot of the others fell a little flat for me. I found myself stepping away from the book a lot.
