This was so action packed from the jump and I hung on every word. Seeing Paige and Warden accept their little secret romance was amazing. My final parting thought it please please please kill off Jaxon I beg of you Samantha.

Although The Mime Order has an interesting premise and a world with potential, the novel falls short in several important aspects, starting with the lack of depth in the characters. Despite the story revolving around Paige and her role in London’s clairvoyant underworld, her development as a character is flat and fails to convey the emotional complexity one would expect from someone who has gone through so much. The secondary characters also fail to stand out, feeling more like decorative figures that don’t contribute much to the story.
The political aspect, which could have been a fascinating element to explore in this dystopian world, is treated in a superficial and simplistic manner. The intrigues between the clairvoyant leaders and the power structure within the criminal syndicate lack the depth and realism that would make decisions and conflicts more believable. Instead of complex strategies and intriguing power plays, what we have are basic confrontations that fail to create real tension.
If we compare the start of this book to the disastrous opening of The Bone Season, it’s clear that the author has slightly improved. The clumsy and overly arrogant info-dumping has been significantly reduced. This allows the reader to piece together information more gradually, giving the novel more of a "show" rather than "tell" feel. While this is an improvement, the novel still suffers from the same underlying issues, leaving the overall result quite poor.
Another aspect that falls short are the dialogues, which often sound like teenage conversations rather than exchanges between characters who are fighting to survive in a brutal world. This juvenile tone undermines the gravity of the scenes, making them feel trivial when greater seriousness is needed.
As for the main couple, the relationship between Paige and Warden is boring and doesn’t make sense. After what they experienced together in the first book, you’d expect their relationship to evolve in a coherent way, but Paige’s continued distrust of Warden, even after discovering that he’s one of the rebels and constantly helps her, doesn’t make sense. This repetitive dynamic feels forced and exhausting, making their relationship neither exciting nor convincing.
In summary, The Mime Order had the potential to be a strong sequel, but the flat characters, weak political elements, immature dialogue, and lackluster chemistry between the protagonists make the novel fall far below expectations.
