I think the way I feel about this duology is best described as ... this is a good story, but it was far too big for the amount of time we got for it, so it all feels very rushed and surface-level. I didn't hate it or anything, but I also felt nothing about it and because everything happened so fast it got confusing quite a lot. this same story could have used a third book or at least the two we have should have been longer imo.

I really enjoyed this book, contrary to many reviews I was looking at. While it did lose the cool tea magic that was so cool in the first book, I really liked the dual perspective and more deeper story. I liked that Kang was torn about his father, I liked that there was a lot of actual death of characters I liked a lot and suffering and good reason that our two main characters didn’t die, I liked that Ning is so honestly angry and tempted to give in to the snake. It’s nowhere near as magical as the first story and the ending was a tad more rushed than I would’ve liked, but overall, a great conclusion to our main story.
This book was a good conclusion to this duology. I felt like some side characters got forgotten in this book. I really appreciate the themes of relearning how to trust and taking on the challenges as well as the breaking of familial bonds necessary to save their world. I thought the development of the magic system made this book more enjoyable. It was difficult to stay engaged at times especially because I had to keep on setting the book down due to my life being busy right now. It did a lot of things good especially for an author’s first series. I would have loved to see a little more of a resolution and how our main characters, Ning and Kang, take care of the aftermath and their time together before their preparations to go their separate ways.

I was keen to find out what happened next in Ning’s story. While I enjoyed this book, I feel the first book had the edge.
