Okay okay okay.
Kang redeemed himself (yay) but he’s a pretty flat character regardless. This counts for everyone.
I enjoyed the story but the ending was rushed and the epilogue was unnecessary in my opinion.
Still read it in two days tho so do with that what you will

This was a great adventure! My two main cirques are that the audiobook narrator changed (understandably for the added perspective of Kang, but Ning’s narrator was SO DIFFERENT especially her version of the chancellor’s speaking voice sounded like a whiny Disney villain and totally different from chapters right before with Kang’s POV / the male narrator voicing the chancellor). And also.. the ultimate bad guys name is the same as a super famous Korean drama actor… so I kept visualizing this actor instead of the ultimate embodiment of nightmares XD
That aside I really enjoyed this epic quest-like adventure!

This is going to be an unpopular opinion but I actually enjoyed the sequel more than the first novel.
The first 1/3rd of the novel is a slow build up to a really interesting and different storyline. The first book heavily focuses on the twists and turns of navigating a court with two opposing warring factions. This one? It introduces an enemy to all and does it well.
We realize where Nings tenacity and persistence is gifted from. We see her struggle against the forces of those two warring factions AND this enemy. There’s a lot of mysticism and I think that’s what made me enjoy it.
You will realize that you’re not seeing her use her skill as much as she did in the first novel. It’s why I’ve knocked it down a star. I really believed there was plenty of opportunity to work that magic into the storyline more. I would’ve loved to see the expansion of the power. It didn’t happen, however.
I understand that people are disappointed with the second book. If you read the first one and feel heavily invested into the way the plot unfolded and the events which took place then read this one with the same expectation then you will be disappointed. Come into it with an open mind and be prepared to experience something new and you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

Still love the idea of tea as magic. Liked the read, but I wouldn't pick it up to read again. Definetly didn't hate it. Don't like the overall lack of love for this book in the reviews. I really like the way Judy Lin wrote this book, and I like the subversive nature this book takes towards its genre.
