Very jarring that the narrator for Ning changed, don't like that they changed it .
I have mixed feelings on this duology.
I really really liked the first book as it was full of magic while the second book mostly focus on following up with the setup? the pace was slow.. idk why and the ending was a tad meh.
also, the drastic changes in POV? felt so weird and out of place.

So disappointed because I loved the first book—the characters, the setting, and especially the tea magic—but this one got…weird. The magic was suddenly bizarrely different from what we had come to expect, centered around ancient gods, and often convenient (transporting them across the country, for instance). The story dragged. Ning became moody and her character arc didn’t really resolve. Princess Zhen was so interesting in the first book, but took a backseat in this one and went flat. So many people die. I tried to put all that aside and just enjoy Ning’s interactions with her sister Shu and with Kang. But then the deus ex machina ending, with Ning essentially doing nothing in the climax, plus Kang losing everything despite all he has already suffered, really ruined it for me. And then, when I thought we’d get at least some closure in the epilogue, Ning doesn’t even end up in her promised role as the court shonnong-shī, which was such a huge goal in the first book. And her relationship with Kang takes no forward steps—they’re not even going to be living in the same city! Sigh. Just so sad. I really wanted to love this duology.
