you could not pay me money to give a shit about these characters
Pretty good! While the first book didn't stay in my memory well, enough of it stayed that I could follow along with this book easily enough. A Very interesting Duology, I liked it! Will probably try to find more stories like this in the future.

Didn’t like this one as much as the first, the beginning felt a bit slow and the end fast, but it was a satisfying end to the series.

“We all believe we are the center of the universe, but we forget we are merely specks among the stars."
I wanted to love this book after how much I adored the first one, sadly it didn't capture me and the storytelling left a lot to be desired. The writing is still interesting and overall concept is stunning, however it spent too long on the journey and the climax & ending fell flat.
Kang's pov was a great addition, I enjoyed getting to see his side of event however it also made him rather unlikeable for the majority of the book. He spends so much time obsessed with his desire etc prove his worth to his father, that he dismissed the horrific events happening around him. Accepts that they're a necessary part of his father's making a stand and place as emperor.
Its only towards the end he starts to accept and see what's happening in front of him, the chancellor and the manipulations going on with the enchantments. Also his bond with Ning was practically non existent until late in the book, the charm they had together was lacking and I was no longer invested in them together.
Now I did adore the adventure in regards to Ning, Zhen, Ruyi & Shu the start was fascinating. As see them on the road seeking support and the revelations they come across along the way, so much tragedy and pain yet hope.
I knew the moment Brother Huang joined he was destined to die, yet I was still disappointed to see it happen. I did adore that we did get to see Wenyi family in this story, give him justice and share his story along with saving his brother. The comparison of his journey to that of Ning & Shu was heartbreaking.
This book if full of hear ache and emotional moments throughout, with all the death and destruction created by the serpent god. So many executions, innocent deaths and cruelty across the story.
Anyway I did enjoy aspects of this story, it simply was lacking in the execution and felt like it wanted to do too much. Events were rushed towards the end and then it was all over, time skip to a brief glimpse of the future giving a hopeful outlook while still in repairing stages & start of something new for Jia.

Loved this action packed duality. This book was a great conclusion to this magical Chinese fantasy. There was more descriptive world building, and the magic system goes more in depth. A story that focuses on the length people will go in order to protect the ones they love.
