i LOVED this book oh my gosh i (almost) cried so many times and it was just such a REAL portrayal of feelings that i think all black women have about dating (and white boys - special thanks to my ex for making it specially relatable!!) but it was just such a special piece of literature and i would recommend EVERY TIME! i won't lie, it did take me a bit of time to get into it and the first half of the book was most definitely more challenging to get through than the second but all in all i did really enjoy it

Wanted to like the book so bad, since I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about it by people who’s opinion I value. Sadly, I am left disappointed. I find the portrayal of Queenie a little shallow, there could have been more depth. The whole story is giving me major pick-me vibes.

This book was way darker than I was expecting and I think some of the plot points were a bit underdeveloped like Queenie's background. It didn't bowl me over but wasn't awful either.

Overall, I didn't really care for it. I liked the growth of Queenie's character, but that's about it. Queenie made decisions that frustrated me a lot throughout, but I'm glad her character was able to work on herself by the end and get to a better place. I think I'm just the wrong audience for this book because there are very important discussions being made throughout in terms of race (especially race relations outside the u.s. in other predom white countries), trauma, and relationships. I just could've done without so much revolving around sex.

So. Much. Trauma.
It’s not specifically anything that triggers me, but this is too much for me right now. To me, this feels more like a chore to read, rather than me actually being invested in the story. (Not poorly written or anything, just currently not for me)
