christine over here suddenly remembering all her childhood horse books
We all enjoyed this story of Joel and Little Bub, even though we don't generally love horse books. There was enough interest in what was going to happen, that the story kept our interest from day to day.
Henry's books are not books that I'm dying to read. In fact, this book sat on my to read shelf for five years or so before I got to it. I added it after reading Misty of Chincoteague, but could never quite summon the interest to begin it. In spite of the fact that her books don't really fit into my favorite genres category, I always feel so good when I'm done reading them. I'll most likely never pick this book up again. But I loved it.
Loved this one as a kid, especially when all horse books had that certain appeal. I think this is also where I first learned about indentured servitude ("Seven years! Seven years!").
A quick and easy read-aloud. Katie liked it.

A true classic about an American breed and a favorite horse that started it all...historical fiction for sure, but based on real places, people, a real horse, a real-time in the young USA, and a real breed of horse that is very much loved for its versatility, compact size, temperament, and resilience.

Before reading this book I didn't know the story of the first Morgan horse, and the only time I'd heard them mentioned was as a breed. This is a fast-paced, interesting account of the story of the first Morgan. It did feel like a very America-centric story, especially with the reasoning behind the War of 1812, but that makes sense.
