Evelyn and Tommy very much remind me of Agatha Christie's Tommy and Tuppence: young, adventurous, newly married. This Tommy is the nephew of an earl and they are visiting the family to pay their respects and figure out their next steps. A big hitch in their plans occurs when the earl dies. Having been a police detective (Tommy) and worked for the police force (Evelyn), the two realize that the men assigned to this case are not doing their job well. So they decide to investigate.
If you like stories that are fairly clued, this is not going to be a book you enjoy but it is a quick and fun read and sets up these two characters nicely.

I found this a lot more entertaining than I initially thought I would. Light suspense and comedy together provided for a brilliant read. My first read of a Catherine Coles book and has definitely got me hooked.

A good old murder mystery as we like them. Set in England after the war, it has a touch of Miss Marple happening. An enjoyable, well-written story with a great cast of characters.
A hunting weekend at Hessleham Hall seems to spell a rather dull time for Tommy and Evelyn. But when the lord of the manor is bumped off, things get rather too exciting.
Even though Manor at the Manor was set in the 1920s, it had a modern feel to it. This led to a very comfortable readability even though it wasn't completely true to the era. The main characters were immediately likeable and the pacing of the book was skilful. As much as I enjoyed this book, the clues to the murderer's identity were lacking. In addition, only a very very hazy foreshadowing marked one character's intent.
The story definitely was a joy to read. I managed to keep up with the immense cast of characters because they were all written so well. The author had thoughtfully provided a who's who list at the beginning of the book, but for once I didn't need it! I look forward to more adventures in this series.
Recommended as a genuine cosy.
