Honestly, this was just the book I was looking for while in a depressive slump. A lot of self help books focus on improving one's personality which is fine but what I really wanted was a book that goes a bit deeper to help you understand your character. I like how each chapter focuses on a different historical figure and how they embody the characteristic of the chapter.
I just couldn’t get in to this one. I had to force myself to finish it and ended up skipping a chapter and a half.
Good survey of western thoughts and characters that point to a forgotten morality. I learned a lot from this book and suspect that I will come back to it in the years ahead. I highlighted more in this book than I probably ever have (I don't highlight at all). The book felt a bit disjointed at times but what sweeping survey of western thought doesn't?
I am sorry to say that I just couldn't get through this one. Maybe because I was listening to the audiobook, but I was bored to tears. I usually love biography, what this book basically is, but not this time. Maybe I will pick it up later.

I like the theme of the book, but I don't think I feel connected with the writing at all.
I really enjoyed David Brooks earlier books, and he tells a story well but....
The Road to Character contains some interesting profiles of people that I do believe are fascinating, and yet, there is a sense of whinging about the book that I found off-putting enough that I was often close to tossing the book across the room. I kept reading it because I still enjoyed the profiles.
Updated: I have raised my rating of the book, because many of Brooks' points keep showing up in my thoughts and reflections on other things. There is much that is admirable about the book, and whinging alone cannot be enough to discredit some thoughtful work. I'd be in deep trouble if it were.
