Awesome. Just enough thrill, blood, chase, betrayal, death and, humanity to keep me up all night reading. This was not one of the current house trained semi neutered Werewolves, thankfully. They are big teeth, hate filled predators. The author did a fabulous job for this readers taste, never going too far, never cutting back to soon, never throwing in the lust is the reason card. Horror ? I don't think I'd call it that, it was a thriller, edge of your seat thriller with some blood, crunched bones and big teeth.

I started book 2, about 10 second after putting this one down

I got this audiobook a while ago, but I could never make it past the first few chapters. I want to like it, I really do, and at times I was amused, but the main character is kinda whiny, and not in a way that serves the plot of the story. I guess there's at least one more book with with this character, but I'm gonna give it a pass.

I've read all of David Wellington's zombie novels (which were all great) so, this was definitely a change. I liked it. There was a build up and things revealed throughout. It would be interesting to see what else he could do with werewolf subjects.

While I enjoy a wide range of interpretations of the genre, the strength of Wellington's interpretation is the intensity he brings to the werewolf affliction. He shies away from traditional romanticism and brings a pragmatism to the challenges of the werewolf state-of-being that are refreshing and interesting. I really enjoyed this tale and hope to read more in this vein.

I wouldn't say this is as good a first book as his previous ones, but I must say I am intrigued enough to be looking forward to the next werewolf novel. He once again combines classical monster mythology with his own mythology, like most authors who use vampires and werewolves, but he uses this device to make them scarier and more "monster" like than human. I'm looking forward to where this series will go.

Good for fans of Wellington, but I'd recommend Monster Island if you're picking up his work for the first time.

Now THAT’S how you write a werewolf book!

3.5 stars This is a quick read and entertaining, but I had to take points off for the main character. She's annoying and does every stupid girly thing that chicks in horror movies have been doing since the beginning of time. When given a choice, she always does the ridiculous thing that's most likely to get her killed. Oh, and to top it off, she's a big ball of daddy issues.

The rest of the story is entertaining though, and worth a read. It's very fast paced and I'll probably read the sequel after I finish my giant stack of library books.
