I adore Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey series and Silent on the Moor is definitely the best of the entire series. Maybe it's the romantic soul in me who loves a good story about the English moors and its tortured hero/heroine but I could not put this book down. The emotional conflict the characters had to endure and work out within themselves but also with each other is one of the stellar aspects of this series and Silent on the Moor. Deanna Raybourn did a fabulous job of managing the delicate balancing mystery/drama of the story and situation, and the romance and inner conflict of the two protagonists within themselves as wells a each other to propel the story and plot forward. Deanna Raybourn is able to use romance as a device to propel the two characters forward without hindering the mystery or the plot of the story - no wonder she won a RITA award for this series.

The story takes place a month or two immediately after the previous book (Silent in the Sanctuary) and Julia had already made up her mind to track down Nicholas Brisbane at his crumbling Yorkshire manor whether he (or anyone else for that matter) wants her there or not. Little does Julia know she got a lot more than she bargained for when setting out on her Yorkshire adventure in the form of murder and familial history.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a well written mystery with strong characters and a great romantic subplot.

Just when the series was in danger of becoming tiresome with the "will they/won't they" relationship between the main characters, Raybourn neatly & definitively answers that question at the conclusion of Silent on the Moor. Her doing so has provided enough of a hook for me to be on the lookout for the next book in the series for what follows . . .

Silent on the Moor could almost be considered the third book in a trilogy (even though there are at least two more books and a short story in the series after this one). A lot of storylines started at the beginning of the series is followed through especially where Brisbane's past is involved.

Brisbane quite Julia's father's home after Christmas and went on to purchase his own estate, Grimsgrave trying to get far away from Julia Grey. At the end of [b:Silent in the Sanctuary|1943742|Silent in the Sanctuary (Lady Julia, #2)|Deanna Raybourn|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1266933194s/1943742.jpg|1946375] Brisbane writes to Portia and asks her to come and assist him in furnishing his neew home. He specifically asks Portia not to mention this to Julia and not to bring her along. Of course we all know that Julia being who she is, she decides to accompany her sister without an invitation.

When they arrive at Grimsgrave there is definitely an air of mystery about the place. It is in a very remote area from the village and doesn't get a lot of visitors. The women of the former owner, the Allenbys, are still in residence awaiting Brisbane to provide a place for them to now stay since they are no longer entitiled to the property. Of course Julia, Portia, and Valerius come for a visit and the past starts to uncover itself. Despite all of that, Julia is determined to get Brisbane to confess his feelings for her one way or another. Prepared to have the status of their relationship figured out before she leaves.

Deanna Raybourn does a great job of setting up the mysteries. They are always very intricate. While there are some things that are very predictable, she does manage to throw in some surprising twists and turns here and there.

I do like Julia as a character. I like that despite everything she is a very strong character. I like that we finally get a resolution to Julia and Brisbane's relationship. Raybourn has built up the tension and the connection between these characters for three books now. I was afraid she would try to extend this further but I'm happy things get figured out. The scenes with them together are definitely always fun to read. I look forward to continuing this series, interested to see where she takes the characters now. Until Then!

I'm still enjoying the Lady Julia Grey series. I really adore Deanna Raybourn's writing and I am reading the series along with its accompanying novellas. Julia, true to form, in meddling and prying in Brisbane's life. She has finagled her way into accompanying Portia to Brisbane's new estate, all while dragging her pets and brother Valerius in tow. They arrive only to be surprised that Brisbane is not the only one in residence. For the female members of the family who, until recent events, owned the estate are still in residence.
There isn't exactly a case to be solved in this installment. But there is still a mystery, and an intruiging one at that because it touches on Brisbane's past.
To be completely honest this book had a lot of filler and background information and there were points where I wondered why I was still reading because it felt as though it was lacking plot. But I continued on and I'm glad I did. There were several mini mysteries threaded throughout the book.
I was able to guess who the parents of the twins were as soon as they were discovered secreted away because there was just something very off about that family. And I had narrowed it down to two people that I thought might be the culprit and shortly before the moment of truth I had decided upon the right villian that was targeting Brisbane.
There were some high stakes in this one. Brisbane, Julia, and Valerius all met with some danger or foul play. We met some of Brisbane's family and learned a bit more of his past. Plus there is finally some real progress between the two. And thanks to some opportune timing they will finally be together.

This turned out to be better than the cover led me to expect. When the mysteries are solved, many creepy, surprising things are revealed.

Julia Grey is back again in Deanna Raybourn’s third installment in the Lady Julia Grey mysteries titled Silent on the Moor.

Julia and her sister, Portia are traveling to Yorkshire to pay a visit to Brisbane. When Julia arrives at the manor of Grimsgrave, she is dismayed by Brisbane’s appearance. He looks like a man haunted by demons. Also Brisbane is not alone. Under his care are Lady Allenby and her two daughters. They have lost their fortune and now have nothing. Lady Allenby used to be Brisbane’s first love till Julia.

Brisbane takes a turn for the worse. To Julia’s great surprise she learns that her love has been poisoned. Now Julia is out to seek the truth. What she discovers is disdain, gypsies, revenge and a long, lost legend that could change Julia’s feelings for Brisbane forever.

I love Julia. She is full of grace and determination. She is no weak flower. She and Brisbane were meant for each other. She seems to be the only one that can turn Brisbane from a grizzly bear into a teddy bear. Brisbane at first appearances may seem cold but once you get to know him, he is a very caring and good detective. If you don’t mind the full details behind what transpired with Julia and Brisbane then you would be fine to read this book without having read the others. I say this because I myself only read the first and third book and not the second. I didn’t feel like I missed much by not reading the second book but I still want to go back and read it. Silent on the Moor makes reference to some things that happened in the first novel. I devoured this book. It was that good. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

What can I say, I adore Deanna Raybourn's books. I love the characters, the settings and the way she has of putting it all together. This was no exception.

Lady Julia Grey has to figure out once and for all of she and Nicholas Brisbane can find a way to be together and be happy. But first some skeletons have to be gotten rid of and some mysteries have to be solved. Brisbane is keeping more from Julia then normal and she's determined to figure it all out. Of course some of Julia's family are around to help, or not help as the case may be.

Another great book in this series that just keeps getting better. Couldn't wait to start the latest in the series and thankfully I had pre-ordered it and it was waiting for me on my Kindle.

I really don't know why I just picked up this series in the middle without reading the first two books, but sometimes insomnia is like that. I honestly enjoyed it despite the lack of context, although I had two major issues with it: first, consistently ending chapters with a variation of, "little did I know that THIS major plot thing would happen shortly after..." and secondly how they basically get together because of all of the manipulations Brisbane used in order to get the outcome he desired. It wasn't my flavor of the day, to say the least. But everything else, especially Julia herself, was absolutely lovely.

I can be added to the long list of readers who don't like the new covers for this series. I thoroughly enjoyed this story though and look forward to the next book from Deanna Raybourn.
