Did this book feel unrealistic in a happily-ever-after sort of way? Yes. Did I care? No. I devoured this book, and I was not really expecting that. I just couldn't put it down.

What an eye- opening book! I have read stories of slavery before but this was so plain and pointed out the discrepancies of when slaves were valued and when they were abused. Very well written!!

A sweet story but a bit bland
It was a good story but similar to many others. The characters were well written but the author stayed away from anything too "deep". It was a good description of how love can grow between a child and adult who is not their parent but it stayed mostly away from the uglier aspects of slavery.

This story takes place in the years before the Civil War. It tells of Mattie, a young woman who is wetnurse for the Wainwright family.
The baby she's given charge of is Elizabeth, who Mattie calls Lisbeth. Mattie teaches Lisbeth many things, the love of music, black-eyed peas, and the first yellow crocuses of the spring.
As Lisbeth grows up, she begins to realize that slavery is wrong, and a brutal act that she witnesses makes it even worse.

I don't *love* when white people write in Black dialects, particularly from times of slavery, but overall a great story.
