Oh to spend a cool autumn evening in Great Hall, listening to the stories of bygone days, sipping October ale and nibbling on pasties and hot buttered scones with the wonderful inhabitants of Redwall Abbey.  This charming little cookbook is actually half a story about the lithe and delightful Sister Pansy and her adventures in the Redwall Kitchens with the good Friar Hugo and other Redwallers.  I loved this little side addition to a world I have loved since I was a child.

Skimming this book for the recipes does it a disservice. Recipes are interspersed with snippets of the characters preparing them for various feasts. This cookbook is a fun companion for any reader who wants to recreate a part of that marvelous Redwall feasting for themselves.

Simple recipes with fairly basic ingredients and instructions for adults who would like to recreate them with children. Could be a useful tool for teaching younger Redwall fans some cooking / baking basics.

A strange mix of a storybook and a cookbook, Jacques makes it work and provides a chance for those who love the world of Redwall to try out some of the fabled recipes for themselves. My family makes the Shrimp and Hotroot Soup with the October Ale every holiday.

Starts with a cute bit about kitchen safety. section for each season starts with a poem then a short story about the creatures of Redwall preparing for a seasonal feast with recipes for each of the dishes interspersed.

Having never read a Redwall novel (book?) these recipes had no context for me.
