Another one with a lot about Roderick Alleyn's son. Which isn't interesting to me.

I had completely forgotten this book existed, but I remembered a fair bit once I got started. But not who did it, so that’s all right!

The Channel-Island setting works well.
SpoilerAnother drug-syndicate-kidnapping-Ricky plot device, not so much. But it is nice having another Lamprey cameo.

I rather liked this one... but perhaps a little despite myself?

Ricky Alleyn is spending the summer trying to overcome writer's block and work on a novel in the village of Deep Cove on the Channel Islands. The village, of course, is filled with colorful characters who all seem to be leading rather complex lives. Everything seemed routine until a young woman is killed while horseback riding. Or was it an accident? Before it's over, Ricky's father, Inspector Roderick Alleyn, is sent to the island to fugure out what is going on. Ngaio Marsh wrote during the Golden Age of Mystery Fiction and her books have been compared to those of Allingham and Christie.

Not one of her best, only to be read by fans, but interesting to see how someone who started publishing in the 1930s dealt with the 1970s.

We're getting very late on in the series now and Roderick's son Ricky has grown up. He's the main character in this one with Roderick only making a relatively late on appearance to fix things. This helps get around the fact that Alleyn must be getting on a bit by this point - as the series has continued to move through time rather than staying stationary at one moment in time. Any way, this has drugs, fire and brimstone preachers and artists. I enjoyed it.
