I'll be honest, at first I wasn't too interested in the book because it took me a couple hundred pages to get into the story. The first half was building the world and getting to know the plethora of many characters. But, I am glad I stuck through with it and it laid a foundation for the story to be built. Towards the end I was captivated by the stories of each characters' lives, and to me each had its own interesting part. Looking forward to the next book.

Wow! Robin Hobb can never go wrong. I loved this and find myself wanting to pick up the next one immediately. So unique and amazing. I don’t know how she does it but I always find myself caring about the characters in her books so much.

The good:
The characters are complex and deep, the different storylines go well together and overall it's an enjoyable book. I enjoyed Paragon and some of his interactions, and the way his story is presented and pieced together throughout the book.

The not so good:
It was soooo long, and the length of the chapters were ridiculous (I think the longest took me around 1,5hrs to read), and the pacing is extremely slow so it really felt like a mental challenge to finish it - even though I did enjoy the writing. Some of the characters I didn't like, for example Ronica (I don't know how she can justify some of her choices), and Malta was very annoying and childish. And the serpents - I still don't understand how they fit into the story other than to annoy and scare Vivacia..?

I think I'd like to continue and finish the series one day, but not anytime soon..

4 stars.

A fun, if a little frustrating read. I wanted to enjoy it more, but there were too many characters and we didn’t spend enough time with each of them. I suppose that’ll change over the course of the trilogy, but I don’t find that I hold many of the characters in great affection, which is important for me when I read/watch anything with an ensemble.
