This felt like an incredibly honest and raw take on young love and everything that it encompasses. Would’ve appreciated their astrology signs though. At least the big three. Cheers.

This is the 2nd of Sally Rooney's books that I have read. I just love her style. I enjoy highly character driven books, and although the main characters had a lot of angst, they were real people. Hence the title Normal People.

Connell and Marianne "date" on/off for years starting in high school and throughout college. Date is a loose term, as neither one of them wants to recognize that what they have been involved in with each other is dating, or a relationship of any kind. It's kind of the funny part of this to me, as every time it is brought up by another character, the definition of their relationship as more than just friends is always quickly dispelled.

The thoughts and feelings are intriguing to me, and just so damn down to earth. They go back and forth (at separate points, and usually not to each other) with admitting they love each other, to crossing signals, to completely not speaking to each other. You can see the love is there, but you just want them to get together and get their shit straightened out for goodness sake!

I think this is where Rooney is so successful in her writing. She is a whiz at showcasing the real human feelings of doubt, the experience of lack of self-confidence, and all of the ups/downs of human relationships. She is masterful at this. Intermezzo was the first of her books that I read, earlier this year, and loved it. I know Normal People was written a few years ago, but I am glad I read them in this order as I could see the progression of her style. It was definitely more polished in Intermezzo, and if she keeps writing similar books, I can see that she will become a formidable force in character-driven literary fiction.

Loved this book! Definitely recommend to peeps who love character driven books, with intense humane relationships, emotions and feelings. She nails it!

I- I don’t know if I loved it or hated it. I think the beauty of this book is that’s it’s not pretending to be something special it just is honest and I had a lot of respect for that.
