Somewhere between a three and a four. I'm looking forward to the next one, now thati see it's a series.
This was such a cozy book and full of word nerd prose. I really enjoyed the journey and I will continue with the series. This book is for all ages and would be extra entertaining to those who love to play with words. I won't spoil the storyline, but there is a little bit of magic and a lot of wholesome adventure.

Loved the characters, but actions didn't have realistic consequences and there were some mysteries that were never explained or came out of nowhere.
I am not in the mood for a kids book currently.

There were elements of this book I loved. Lots to enjoy here for book lovers and mystery lovers and word/puzzle lovers, and I appreciate any audio book that can keep me engaged with the story when I need distraction from the flu.
The only thing that dropped my rating was that something started to make me very uncomfortable with the magic portrayal, and the darkness of the 'black' magic, and the fact that 'good' magic didn't seem to be different in any practical way.
Because of that, I will not be continuing the series.

Moderate: Death of parent
What a lovely book-perfect for middle grade readers who like mental puzzles. The Winterhouse Hotel has a massive library, delicious food, and lots of activities for orphan Elizabeth and her new friend Freddy.
"Orphan Elizabeth Somers’s malevolent aunt and uncle ship her off to the ominous Winterhouse Hotel, owned by the peculiar Norbridge Falls. Upon arrival, Elizabeth quickly discovers that Winterhouse has many charms―most notably its massive library. It’s not long before she locates a magical book of puzzles that will unlock a mystery involving Norbridge and his sinister family. But the deeper she delves into the hotel’s secrets, the more Elizabeth starts to realize that she is somehow connected to Winterhouse. As fate would have it, Elizabeth is the only person who can break the hotel’s curse and solve the mystery. But will it be at the cost of losing the people she has come to care for, and even Winterhouse itself?"
