Reichl writes Soooo well, you can practically taste the food. But her behavior was terrible and I nearly stopped because I couldn't like or believe in her. Ultimately I'm glad I finished, and I will read more from her.

I preferred Comfort Me with Apples to Tender at the Bone, because I enjoyed the subject more - her relationship with her ex-husband and her divorce from him and marriage to her current husband - but I still liked Garlic and Sapphires best. Ruth has had some amazing adventures across the globe, so if you're one for vicarious adventures to faraway lands, it may be for you.

ruth reichl is such a wonderful storyteller, everything in this book and all the ups and downs in her life ultimately come back to food and it's so masterfully done, also i can't wait to try some of these recipes!

Mmm...If there is anything that can equal to a good meal, it might as well be an interesting book about food.

I read Garlic and Sapphires years ago and just came across this on the library bookshelves. I started it probably around 11pm thinking that I would just read a few chapters and I couldn't put it down. I opted not to look at the clock when I was done.

Very fun - glimpses of California during the foodie revolution of the 1980s.
