This didn't end up being quite what I was expecting, but it was surprising in the best way. It's overwhelmingly a story about grief, family, trauma, and sacrifice, with elements of mystery and magic, and it really captivated me. It's beautifully-written with a wonderfully strong atmosphere, and I adored the sibling and family relationships. I liked the romance too, and I appreciated the backstory around the protagonist's previous 'almost' relationship and the depth that this adds to the developing romantic plot. I also really loved the threat that music weaves throughout the story and the way it ultimately reflects the redemption occurring. There's a lot going on in this book, but it doesn't feel like too much (although it's definitely heavy just because of the subject matter, so do be warned), and I'm really glad that I read it.

This wasn't wholly what I was expecting. I really enjoyed the story and the atmosphere, but the characters didn't really work for me.

Heard about it through Spirits podcast, very much fits that vibe

Story for the most part was okayish but it's the main character I had the problem with. She was irritating, selfish and putting everyone at risk. Her friends were also people I couldn't connect to, at all. Her mom has to be the most neglectful mom ever to be written as a caring one, seriously! The jump scares were boring and the secrets in the elder generation were unnecessary and absurd. I'm glad I didn't go into 2021 believing in the hype of this book but instead of this, a children's book called Doll Bones was way more interesting. But probably the only two things that worked for me is native and folk tribe recognition, brujas and LGBTQ+ representation. But bi or not, unable to make a mind between two love interests and not being loyal to either won't ever be cool. For all the build up, the Jim thing resolved like it was nothing and the main climax looked like that of a Twilight Breaking Dawn Hallelujahs. So underwhelmed and disappointed even with my low expectations going in.
