This book was an impulse read, I really liked it! These days I find a lot of YA lacks the character/atmospheric/world building depth I am looking for in novels. With 2 significant mysteries, and a whole lot of Gothic, this was a driving read that was hard to put down.

I loved the connected themes of music, family, and friendship with ghosts. It took me a while to find my pace with the book, but from that point on I liked how the story unfolded. I liked the storyline of Shady navigating relationships of attraction and support with Sarah and Cedar. I also liked how Orlando’s Cuban family history showed another side of paranormal interactions.

What an atmospheric haunting story. The first 2/3 were creepy and mysterious and I thoroughly enjoyed most of it. I don't quite love the last 50ish pages, it just wrapped up a little too predictably.

I felt that the cast of characters was interesting, but it felt like the author had too many and not enough time to develop full personalities for each of them. The romance subplots felt a little out of place to me and underdeveloped. But the rest of the plot was intricate and fascinating. I would have rather that they cut the romance altogether, or if they were going to have the romance that they spent more time developing the relationships. Little bit of a slow start but the latter half goes pretty quickly. All in all, I did enjoy the story!
This was a really atmospheric read, just the right level of creepy for me as I'm not a horror fan. The characters were all really interesting, I loved Shady and how she was dealing with so much all at once. The story was very well paced and flowed nicely. The slow reveal of the truth as the story progressed was also well executed.
4.5 stars.

This book took a while to get going.
Once I hit the 1/3 mark, I couldn't put the book down.
Though this ghost story is not quite scary, it uses big emotions to drive up the stakes and make the characters' struggles compelling.
I appreciate that the narrative took time to explore its m/f/f love triangle. Protagonist Shady pines for her emotionally-distant friend Sarah while enjoying the attention of local cowboy Cedar.
Readers in recent years have been hard on love triangles. This one avoids many of the toxic love triangle tropes by focusing on how the characters feel. Even Cedar is honest about his emotions throughout. Though I thought one aspect was resolved too easily, I liked the love triangle's inclusion and appreciated how it ended.
I was worried the book would end on a sequel hook and was relieved when it didn't. Ghost Wood Song delivers on all the narrative elements it introduces, hauntings and all.
Ghost Wood Song is a great autumn read that'll give you chills.
