I really enjoyed Youngmi Mayer's voice and her story was remarkable.

She tells of being born to an ambitious immature Korean mother and an unsettled immature American father.  Raised in Korea, she looked too white to fit in but knew she wasn't white enough.

She says outrageous things that made me laugh out loud.  A solid memoir.

I love her casual writing style. She is so funny that you sometimes forget just how brilliant some of her lines are. I learned so much about Korean culture without it feeling shallow.

Not only is Youngmi Mayer supremely funny, her insights on the world are unique and true. There's a lot of self-deprecation in the comedy sphere, but Youngmi's approach is a type of inquiry into self, culture, history, ancestry, society (etc) that goes beyond depreciating to feel both constructive and profound.
I love listening to a memoir as an audiobook, and hearing this in her own voice added so much. I was especially touched by how often I could hear both laughter and tears in her voice.

This was incredible. Brilliant. Vibrant. Even when Mayer over explained just about everything, I felt like all the words and stories tied together and had deep intention and relevance. Even if I don’t know that all of the ties are psychologically “true” (or whatever), I feel like Mayer has clearly worked through these things and found deep meaning in all of it; I felt her earnestness, hand-in-hand with her innate Korean bitterness and emotionality, and it makes me feel inspired and somehow very trustful of her narrative. I appreciate our specific shared experiences are so many parts of being an immigrant, othered, Asian, a woman, a daughter, a mother (etc.)… I admire the way Mayer skillfully articulates her experiences and such specific nuances, and then also invites others in on it all, even if they don’t share these identities.

Mayer has lived a fascinating life and she’s obviously hilarious. I wish this had followed a bit more linear of a narrative though.

Most highly recommend. I had never heard of her before, but I picked up this book because it was so well-reviewed. It did not disappoint. This lady has had a fascinating life and she writes really well.
