i've long been a fan of youngmi mayer  and knew I'd connect with her memoir. she's a powerful, funny, and bracingly honest storyteller. hearing the memoir in her voice was a gift, you really hear her emotions and humour shine through. heed the content warnings, but i wouldn't say this is a heavy read or listen. i loved it

Youngmi is such a gifted writer and interesting person. I love how honest she is and that she’s unapologetically herself. Her ability to weave together personal experiences, storytelling, humor, history, and culture so seamlessly is really special and unique. I especially enjoyed learning more about the specifics and nuances of having both Korean and biracial identities, her descriptions of the relationship between imperialism and intergenerational trauma, and beautifully detailed spiritual experiences. I flew through this, and it was probably the best thing I read this year!

I knew nothing about this author before reading her book, and I’m so glad I picked this up. Honest,  unapologetic, relatable yet completely foreign—this is my favorite kind of memoir.

I’ve never read a book so insightful yet so base. I’m not even going to bother filling in the content warnings bc it covers everything. Yay, intergenerational trauma! But seriously, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. We need more voices like Youngmi Mayer’s.
