Émile și Joanne sunt două personaje pe care nu le voi uita degrabă. Curajul de care dau dovadă e de admirat. Émile prin faptul că știe ce vrea în pragul morții și nu ezită, pornește într-o călătorie de regăsire; Joanne prin ajutorul pe care i-l oferă lui Émile și devotamentul față de acesta în cele mai grele și urâte momente posibile.
Extrem de bine conturate personajele, li s-a dat câte o voce puternică, confruntarea lor cu trecutul și prezentul, cu dorința de a uita din amintiri și de a ține bine de ele.
Finalul a fost cum mă asteptam, trist, frumos, surprinzător. Am plâns, mi-a atins latura sensibilă. Până și semnificația titlului e sfâșietoare.
Se spune că, în ceasul morții, muribunzii îşi văd viata trecându-le prin fața ochilor, că retrăiesc momentele cele mai intense. Nu știu dacă este adevărat, dar cred că toți avem nevoie să ne întoarcem în trecut înainte de a pleca, să revedem evenimentele cu alți ochi, să devenim mai înțelepţi odată cu trecerea anilor, să înțelegem (cu Î mare), să iertăm, să ne iertăm. Nu sunt decât la începutul drumului. Calea este încă lungă. Sper că voi reuşi, că la capătul vieţii voi trage linie și voi pleca în pace.

I'm just adding one star for the ending, which was beautiful. The rest of the story took me so much hard work to get through. Maybe it was the translation, but maaaannnn was this a rough read.
Gripe nr. 1: why is Emile such a sexist without getting through any character development in the story?
Gripe nr. 2: is this just a mindfulness manifesto?
Gripe nr. 3: why didn't the book start halfway through Joanne's perspective? Would've been a lot easier than having all those annoying flashback with Emile's ex.
Gripe nr. 4:the baby twist at the end that you could see coming from miles away.
Wouldn't recommend this book. Super grateful for the buddy read I did, otherwise this would've been a DNF.

At over 500 pages, it’s definitely a thick book, but I flew through it in just six days which is a testament to how compelling the story and characters are. The emotional payoff at the end was immense; I cried so much, and it felt completely earned. The characters are beautifully developed, and Da Costa handles the subject of Alzheimer’s with sensitivity and clear research.
Despite its length, this is absolutely a book worth reading if you’re looking for something heartfelt, human, and ultimately unforgettable.
