How come nobody told me how much fun Georgette Heyer was.

I love Georgette Heyer and this is my favourite.

(I wish the publisher would re-edit the 20th century casual antisemitism though)

What a fun story!

Very, very funny. One of the best examples of this genre, with playful and sharp-witted descriptions of unique characters and social codes.

Well, it took about a week to finish, as I wasn't always in the mood for it. The language is gorgeous and I love The Chessmaster trope that Sophy embodies. The Jewish bit (and yes, I made sure I was listening to the unredacted version) is whatever. Heyer at some point disparages Spaniards, too, and the French as well. It's not great but it seems more a blind, lazy stereotype than active malice and frankly, as a Jew, I very likely wouldn't have noticed had I not read about it elsewhere. The fact that Sophy and Charles are first cousins is worse. The names of all the dudes got, frankly, a little tangled for me - not that it seemed to matter to the plot. I'll read Heyer again, but not quite yet.

Poor showing by Heyer

The ending really ruins the story and makes Sophy nothing but a spoiled brat. It's rather surprising that Heyer had her heroine do so many things that would have cast her of outside of society considering her love of historical accuracy.

I love Goergette Heyer! This book was a lot of fun. Sophy is coniving in an "Emma" sort of way and is very spunky and fun. The other characters are intriguing as well and I enjoyed all of them. I found the plot predictable, but I didn't know HOW it was all going to work out and that made it fun. Great fun read.

An amusing light read. I enjoyed it.
