The characters were well drawn and sympathetic; I even felt for the uptight Miss Wraxton, ostensible villain. Sophy is sparkling, of course, and not too out of place. The unfortunate visit to the Jewish moneylender can't help but take away from the pleasure of the book, and even though I know it was more acceptable in that time, romance between cousins is still off-putting. Those issues aside, I'm glad to have finally sampled an author I've seen praised so often and found the book mostly enjoyable.
Too often in these sorts of books the heroine must have her humbling comeuppance in order to realize true love, etc etc. Three cheers for Heyer and for the Grand Sophy, who never has cause to repent!
Been procrastinating to read this book for months now and I finally get the chance to read / listen to it.
I never thought I'd love this book. Sophy is incredible in so many ways. There's no words to describe her personality and thinking.
The author really did a great job with this book.
Shout out to the narrator for the audibook!

This is my second Heyer book, and I'm officially a fan. I enjoyed this book even more than the last one I read, for all the same reasons. It takes out everything that bores me about Regency Romance and leaves me to enjoy the rest. It's smart, witty, and I particularly enjoyed Sophy, who is probably about as scandalous as I would have been in that era. There was enough drama to be interesting, but it wa slight enough to be able to predict the outcome with fair certainty--once again, an excellent airport novel and just the thing for some light, entertaining reading.
This particular books appears to be the favorite of all Georgette Heyer's books. I had to wait a bit to get it on hold from the library. Fortunately for my husband and family, I don't have anymore of her books from the library to read at present. I'd best start working on the stack of other books in my room. :) It has been a fun week of reading Georgette Heyer.
I stayed up entirely too late last night reading this book. I didn't want to put it down. I love Sophy! She is a whirl wind. She came to stay for a time with her aunt's family while her father was away in Brazil. I don't think they knew what hit them. Sophy put their house in total chaos and they were all much improved because of it. Her fights with her cousin Charles were so much fun to read.
As many of you know, I love reading romance books. I am of the opinion that any books is improved by having some romance. :) That said, even those these are "romance books" they are substantial and not just fluff and are very well written.

Why not 5 stars? A few things. I wish
1. He was her step cousin not blood cousin.
2. Remove the antisemitic character. The scene is great but just remove 2-3 descriptor words.
3. It’s not spicy At All (my preference)
4. make Ms. Waxton slightly less like able.
But it’s so so so funny

I cannot care for Charles’ treatment of Sophy at the very end or of the inappropriate stereotyping of Jewish money lenders, but otherwise this book was fantastic. It was so funny, with delightful characters. If not one of Heyer’s more romantic books, it was one of her more thoroughly plotted out with plenty of character growth and silly scrapes.
Thoroughly enjoyed but was heavily disappointed that the full book wasn't included.
