Natalie, a school art teacher, is still mourning the disappearance of her fiancé, who vanished the day before their wedding 5 years prior. On the yearly anniversary, Natalie drowns her sorrows in alcohol in the safety of her home. However, when her best friend Sloane convinces her to go out to a bar on the 5th year anniversary, Natalie's life will never be the same. While at the bar, they encounter Kage, the mysterious and muscular newcomer who just moved in next door to Natalie. It turns out, Kage, the second in command for the Russian mafia, is in town to collect a debt and kill Natalie. But once he sees her, he cannot fathom anything less than making her his, mafia obligations be damned. As the pair explore their connection, a war within the mafia blooms and bodies start dropping around them.
I didn't read the excerpt, so I had no idea I was starting a mafia romance. However, I do think Geissinger writes them well. The spice was spicin and Kage is down bad for Natalie. As someone who thought he would be alone forever and didn't do romance at all, he had good growth as a partner, although his methods are a bit extreme. The book ends on a cliffhanger, so naturally I'll have to read the next book.

This was quite the romance. It was filled with loss & grief, everlasting friendship/ride or die, a love that knocks you off your feet, epic banter & sass, chaos, obsession, love, hope, betrayal, & so much more.
I love that each of our main characters are complex characters, there is a ton of character growth, & that Kage was the utterly morally gray man that you absolutely loved.

I read this book with The Swoony Readers book club. I was fighting a slump pretty much all of July but as soon as I picked up this book I was immediately sucked into the story, and I didn't want to stop reading. This just gave me everything I needed at the time to get me out of my slump. I loved the banter between the Nat and Kage. I also really loved the friendship between Nat and Her best friend Sloan and their interactions together. They were just so funny. The spice was definitely spicing and I loved that too. Was this predictable? Yes, but do I care? Not one bit. My only complaints were that it was a little too insta love for me and I really wanted to see Kage grovel in the end because God knows he needed to. Did either of these issues I had affect my enjoyment of this book in any way, no. Like I said this was just what I was needing. I finished this book wanting to immediately continue with series and that never happens. I bought the book and borrowed the audiobook and as of 7/28 I started reading book two.
