Plot was better than the last one, the spice rarely drew me in considering how much there was of it. Still like the characters. There’s so much filler and repetition of the exact same sentiments/thoughts. Plot points were obvious but still a fun read.

So, I knew I was going to love Davis Montgomery, but I didn’t realize I would love him this much! Okay, maybe I did because who wouldn’t love a broody former Marine, but whatever. I also loved Dakota McGraw so much–she was a strong woman (even if she didn’t always believe that) who worked hard to get what she wanted out of life. She also knew how to bake and I’m always here for a baker. That also meant that her nickname from a certain broody former Marine was “cupcake” and good lort if that didn’t melt my heart. Dakota comes back to her small town home of Resurrection, Montana for a fresh start in life after running from the demons of her past. And she knew in her heart that she would always be safe with the man she spent a scorching hot summer with 6 years ago, Davis Montgomery. Davis was determined to keep Dakota safe after he learned she could be in danger, especially after she revealed that she was also pregnant. Both Dakota and Davis were determined to keep things strictly platonic because both of them were sure that Dakota would be leaving again soon. But, one night they just can’t resist their attraction and chemistry anymore and things get explosive. After that, Davis is even more determined to keep Dakota safe…and keep her in Resurrection for good this time. This was such a great second-chance romance! I loved how protective Davis was of Dakota throughout this book and, eventually, how protective he was of her baby, too, even though it wasn’t his child. Dakota was also such a strong woman even when she didn’t fully believe that, but Davis was determined to help Dakota see her strength again. Once she did, Dakota was an unstoppable force and it was the most amazing thing to see! I loved seeing Dakota’s relationship with her sister Fallon evolve; Fallon pushed Dakota away when she first got back to town, but once Dakota finally went all big sister and yelled at Fallon, they were able to reconnect and become close again. I liked seeing their relationship grow throughout the book and I liked watching them work hard to regain their sisterhood. I also liked watching Dakota bond with Charlie’s wife, Ruby, whom we met in Tame the Heart, and form their little girl gang! It was also nice to see Davis and his brothers banter and open up to each other. Davis has always been closed off with his brothers, but Dakota helped him grow and open up more with his family. Both Dakota and Davis grew a lot as people in this story, and that’s one of my favorite things to watch in books. This book had a bit of suspense in it, too, and it definitely keeps you on your toes! Watching Davis and Dakota fight for their relationship and work through their problems together was beautiful to see. I’m not sure which Montgomery brother’s story we’re going to get next, but I’m beyond excited for Wyatt and Ford’s stories!
Quotes I Loved:
"I mean it. Anytime you ask, I'll be there. Five seconds, five minutes, five lifetimes. I will always come for you. No matter what." -Davis
"Someone once said life begins with a bang and ends with a whimper. But I think life starts with fire. Burn everything down to build it back up." -Dakota
"...the minute my father says Davis, my mind automatically says safe." -Dakota
"My knight in shining armor is a six-foot-three scowling Marine. ...Whiskey, honey, and a late-night lullaby all rolled into one handsome country boy." -Dakota
"Bravery is being scared and doing it anyway." -Davis
"I'll give her every broken piece of me if it means protecting her." -Davis
"Dakota's a dream. A man doesn't wake up from a woman like this." -Davis
"Brawn and beast. Cowboy and cool. Whiskey and warrior. The kind of man who makes you feel like the most important, loved, luckiest, and beautiful woman in the universe." -Dakota
"All I see is us. All I see is Davis. Whiskey and a rebel soul. Duty and destruction and rough hands." -Dakota
"I've told Dakota more than I've ever told another person in my life. She's heard about the darkest parts of me, and still brings me into the light." -Davis
