This is a short book, 96 pages. But, like J L Carr's 'A Month in the Country', it manages to pack into its pages ideas and emotions that other books take hundreds of pages to reveal. Written in 1958 by Aitmatov, it is a book set in Kyrgyzstan, which was Aitmatov's home and the land is as much of a character as any human in it.

This is a love story. Not just a love story about two people falling in love, but of love for one's homeland, for one's family and for art. I don't want to say too much about the plot, because there is one particular moment in the book that you don't want spoiled.

It is translated by James Riordan. I can't tell you whether it reflects the original, but it feels 'right' to me and that's all you can ask. The book flows with such deceptive simplicity that you don't realise that you been taken out into some deep places.

A simple tale beautifully told. The landscape is as much the star as the characters in it.
