Who better to write this magical book than the author of The Wizard of Oz? Baum did an incredible job with this story. I had never heard of it before I added it to my Goodreads shelf and I only came across it in the Scribd library.
It's a quick listen and would be a quick read too. The language is quite simple so it would be good for young readers; highly recommend!

Middle grade. Nice story. Horrible afterward.
Story: In this version of the Santa story, a nymph in a forest finds a baby, adopts him, and the baby grows up to become Santa Claus, with the help of lots of other fantastical woodland creatures.
Characters: Santa is the star and we see him in his youth, adulthood and old age. We also meet nymphs, fairies, goblins and even the king of the forest. Lots of children get individual stories.
Language: This is definitely geared toward middle grade. For one, they are past a "certain age" when they have more adult info about Santa. For another, younger readers would not have the patience to get through the chapters. The plot is intricate, there are many individual stories and there are a number of characters. On top of that, fantastical creatures are not Disneyfied, but speak with adult intelligence, which is likely less entertaining to younger readers. That being said, older readers will appreciate the same atmosphere as the Oz story in this one and enjoy the book as a whole.
Great Christmas read for older readers.

I watched the animated version of this recently and it was like an acid trip come to life, so I had to read the source of this fevered dream. Not quite as odd as the stop-motion version, but still quite different, but very charming.

Along with the animated 2000 movie, this book and story has always been my favourite Santa Claus tale. I adore the incorporation of the original fable of St Nicolas with the fae world, I think it works perfectly to create a magical world.
