Only because I love THE WAR OF THE WORLDS & THE TIME MACHINE & THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU so much do I consider THE INVISIBLE MAN a disappointment. A startlingly original concept at the time, and I think still an idea of unrealized potential, Wells execution is good not great. You could choose two paths for the main character to ultimately follow: either murderous rage or existential acceptance along the lines of Richard Matheson’s THE SHRINKING MAN. I would have been happy with either. Wells chose murderous rage with some inspired staging and carnage but the man who became invisible appears to have been a serious jerk from jump so his going nuts is not much of a turn of events. Though it is a pretty wild ending—bravo. Also didn’t care for the overall structure—there is a long portion in the middle where the Invisible Man tells much of his back story and things start to drag. This portion does allow his counterpart to come to an important decision about him but this could have been handled more efficiently. Definitely worth a look for classic literature sake, but read the others mentioned above first.
This is the first H.G. Well’s story I’ve read, and it makes a pretty good impression. While I wasn’t super interested for the first half or so of the story, once I got about halfway into it, I found it really hard to pull myself away. This was a really well written story. I liked it a lot. To say I loved it may be an over exaggeration, but I’ll definitely be reading more of his stories in the future.

Bright side of Covid quarantine? It’s not the result of a homicidal invisible man on the loose.
The first half of the book (or more) was really difficult to engage in the characters or plot. For such a short book, it says something that I didn’t finish it for so long. You don’t really get much of a story until the last 75 pages.

I cannot begin to tell you how dull & disappointing this book is. Most classics are (let’s be real) but after the joy of Dracula & Great Gatsby, I have *some* standards at least.
The only saving grace here is how short the book is (sub 200 pages!) and that the plot & writing finally picks up in the last 50 pages or so. Not exactly winning any trophies here, but you’ll end the book feeling good, at the very least.
H. G. Wells, I am so sorely disappointed in your shoddy writing skills & piss poor excuse of a plot. There’s probably fanfictions with invisible men out there that are better.
I really needed to slog my way through this, despite its short length. Entertainment value was very minimal (until the last 25%) and if there was anything in here to gain outside of aforementioned terrible entertainment, I didn’t see it. Pick up at your own risk, I won’t be recommending this to anyone.
