James Henry Trotter is a happy boy living on the beach with his parents but all that changed when his parents were away and got eaten by a rhinoceros that had escaped from a zoo. Thus, James is sent to his aunts.

Unlike his loving parents, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spike are abusive. One day, a strange man appears and gives James strange green things that are supposed to change his life. Accidentally, James drops the green things and they went into the earth.

This book is a series of adventures including giant insects, cloudmen and how rainbows and hailstones are made, and traveling on a peach carried by seagulls.

I've read this book many times with students and felt it was an okay read, but hardly Dahl's best. Reading it aloud to my little one, though, was simply the best. I wasn't sure how she was going to like it, but she's now declared it her new favorite book and that she wants to read all of the Roald Dahl books. Some of the comments in this book haven't aged particularly well and the whole Cloud Men section hits a wrong note for me, but the story itself is fun and the characters are charming.

Cute, but not as enjoyable as the others I've read so far.

Another great story from Roald Dahl. Not my favourite but very enjoyable. Loved all the animal characters and it's a fab way to stop children being scared of insect we usually screech about (especially Miss Spider).
