This was a bit of a slow read for me. WWII comes to the Island of Curacao in 1942, which forces Phillip and his mother to flee the Island, even though fleeing has its' own risks, because German U boats are scouring the area. Unfortunately the Germans have seen them. The book starts off slow, but gets better farther on, and discusses some very important topics. Although I didn't enjoy this one as much as his Outer Banks Trilogy, it was a good book and I learned a few things that I didn't know.

While I was initially intrigued by a different perspective on World War 2, this book is painfully outdated. Phillip, our main character, only learns to accept Timothy, the black man who saved his life, after he goes blind and has no choice but to trust Timothy. Lots of dated language and attitudes.

I had to read this book for English at the beggining of high school. I wasn't very into reading then so thats probably why I didn't appreciate it as much as i would now. But I still thought it was pretty good even when I didn't like reading!

WWII and the Caribbean, in fact a part of the Caribbean I have been to and the description of the colourful homes and streets was wonderful. It is a story of survival that is a sure draw for kids, Phillip has to overcome an awful lot of challenges, including blindness, a shiowreck, and natural disasters. But is does perpetuate a lot of derogatory stereotypes.

For such a short book, it packs a punch. It made me cry, but not where you think. It was at the end when he was rescued.
