odyssia's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 12%

Too many cherry-picked examples and 'fixed mindset = arrogance, rigidity, etc.' when these are different things.

I don't think this book is as helpful as it pretends to be.

This book isn't amazing -- it's a little self-helpy -- but the ideas are great and I was looking for ways to explain the concept of fixed mindset vs. growth mindset to kids and families, and it gave me a few.
informative

This book had me at the cover. I had read the online book overview which described the main point of the book --
it's not just our talents and abilities that brings us success, what is more important is your effort.
I knew that and I had been trying to instill that moral of discipline and hard work in my 4 boys for 19 years with no success.
When I went to the store and saw the cover -- Learn to fulfill our potential. They actually listed parenting and school!
This was it. I know success is 99% effort, I've lived it. But this book is going to teach me how to effectively communicate this to my kids and give me creditability because someone else with a PhD has researched it and proved it. I won't tell my boys it was a woman who wrote it. The people near me at the bookstore may have heard a quick gasp of excitement as I read the cover, "YES, this is the one".
She came up with 2 politically correct categories. My categories prior to reading the book were lazy and hardworking. But I don't have a PhD.
1. fixed mindset-they are born with ability and do not need to try hard. However, they are only interested if they are successful right away. If they have failure they quit.
2. Growth mindset- become more interested in task when they have failure and spend time researching and teaching themselves how to overcome their failure and improve always looking for a new challenge and view failure as a necessary learning experience.

I loved this book. She gave great examples backed with research. Even had a chapter with examples of sports Champions. I was so excited to share the information with my kids. How could they not be convinced when Michael Jordan, perhaps one of the hardest-working athletes in basketball was quoted saying, "mental toughness and the heart are a lot stronger than some of the physical advantages you might have." Cut from basketball in HS and goes on to the pros. I had highlights, sticky notes and tabbed page throughout my book. I was so excited to convey the information to my boys. Only to see glazed over eyes and hear crickets. They still won't listen to me but at least I have planted another seed.
Great book. But as usually it didn't fix me as a parent or help me to fix my kids. I rank this one above the many other self-improvement books I have read.

A parent of one of my English students suggested this book. It took a little bit of time for my request to come though at the library since it was such a popular book. (Now it is the Book Club choice for the county.) It had some interesting ideas for how I can improve my teaching & my interactions with my students. I have always stated that with effort any student can do well in my class, but now I can try to be more deliberate in my dialogue with them & in how I praise them.
